PELICAN is a custom Doug Hylan design inspired by the Chesapeake Scrape boat. Scrape boats are traditional Chesapeake workboats that are found in the shallow waters off Tangier and Smith Islands, harvesting the soft shell blue crab. The open boat features a low freeboard, a broad beam, and a shallow V-bottom, characteristics suited to harvesting crabs using a crab scrape, a type of dredge. A sharply rising bow and a box transom help handle the bay’s choppy waters. This particular boat was modeled after DARLENE, a well known scrape boat built at Smith Island’s Rhodes Point by rack of eye: the practiced builder used no drawn plans. Some years later, the Smithsonian saw DARLENE as an outstanding specimen and took her out of the water for three days to study her design. Though she is rooted in tradition, PELICAN boasts her own modern upgrades. The outboard power (2017 Yamaha F200 with electronic shift+throttleOnly 100 HRS on the engine!), power assist hydraulic steering, the console and hard shelter top, the forward cuddy with toilet and bunks and the modern construction with two-part paint are all concessions to her intended use as a pleasure boat. PELICAN is offered in nearly new condition at well below the cost of her custom construction. If you are looking for a unique boat with deep Chesapeake roots easy maintenance and a good turn of speed PELICAN is an excellent choice.
